There are a lot of cool watches out there, and with the rise of popularity of mechanical and vintage watches, a veritable perfect storm is gathering. Often, the collector/enthusiast sits at the center of this storm, watching prices skyrocket and availability dwindle; the perils of the information age as applied to exhaustible, unique commodities.
This phenomenon often leads to a lack of clarity and a feeling of desperation about what to buy and when. While there is no hard and fast rule, we believe that buying a watch - any watch - should be motivated by the joy one derives from it, not its monetary value or its possible future appreciation.
For those of you who've been lurking around the site for a while, you know that we're pretty passionate about DOXA. Generally, we herald the brand's groundbreaking work with the Sub 300 - the watch the changed the face of dive watches and SCUBA history forever - but every once in a while, we find an earlier piece worthy of the same laud.
When we saw this time-only DOXA from the late 1940s, we knew we had spotted something special. The pairing of the glossy black dial with gold printing with the gold fancy hands is incredibly pleasing, and the dash of red on the arrow of the sweeping seconds hand adds a touch of style and whimsy. Most notable however is the watch's incredible condition; virtually New Old Stock, this piece appears to never have been worn. It even retains its original strap and paper hang-tag - something you never see on watches of this vintage.
If you ask us, this is one great way to get a classic piece from a storied brand that has clearly flown well under the radar until now!
