Tudor first introduced the Ranger in 1967. A rugged, purpose-built tool watch, it was was always intended to be used and abused.
Sadly, far too many original Rangers were lost to time making finding one a odyssey in its own right. The scarcity of Rangers the dearth of original parts has lead to an unfortunate rise of faked, 'Frankensteined' and put-togethers.
So what's a lover of the vintage Tudor Ranger to do? Tudor appealed to the Ranger's wide following by debuting the Tudor Heritage Ranger at Baselworld in 2014. Dubbed by Tudor as a "reinterpretation" rather than a "reissue," the Tudor Heritage Ranger puts a contemporary spin on the original while still retaining elements of the original.
Aficionados of the original Ranger will immediately recognize the layout of the dial; the luminescent numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock mirror the original's layout. The stainless steel case has the look and feel of the original, but with Tudor's branding: the rose on the crown and the shield on the case back. While it bends toward modern sizing at 41mm, Tudor elected to produce the watch with holed lugs, a pleasing trait and a little nod to the vintage Oyster practicality.
In addition to beefing up the case, Tudor reinvigorated their bracelet design, fitting their heritage piece with a sturdy solid-link unit with bar-end links instead of fitted end links capable of going into (and coming safely out of) just about any environment. And for those that prefer a lighter wear, Tudor included a high-quality camouflage canvas NATO-style strap that brings out the Ranger's lineage brilliantly.
Even though this isn't a vintage Ranger, we feel as though it has got the chops to give that vintage feel. In like-new condition and coupled with its original box and papers, this Ranger is ready to take on some patina.
