Why We Love it

These days, we’re attached to our devices — phones, computers, smartwatches, etc. Sure, they’re convenient. But wouldn’t it be nice to shed our digital skin for a while and return to a more analog past? One way you can accomplish this is via a watch with a mechanical alarm.

A mechanical alarm makes use of an extra mainspring barrel whose energy powers a hammer. At the appointed time, the hammer beats against a small gong, which sounds the alarm. Popularized by the Vulcain Cricket — the watch of many U.S. presidents — this system was subsequently used by numerous brands, Certina among them.

This particular alarm watch is a Certina Ref. 681-3750-41 from the 1970s. Housed in a 39.5mm stainless steel cushion case with dual, signed crowns, an acrylic crystal, and a screw-down caseback, it features a sunburst blue Tritium dial with applied indices, a rotating center alarm indicator disc, a matching ‘cigarette’ handset, and a date window at 3 o’clock.

Powered by the automatic Certina Calibre 861 (A. Schild Calibre 5008), it comes fitted to one of our blue Analog:Shift leather straps with a steel pin buckle.

Watches such as this one are fun and wonderful timepieces, and there's no telling if and when one of these in any condition, let alone excellent condition such as this example, will surface again.

If you crave a return to less digital times, then this is the accessory to do it with!

Brand Story

+
Founded in Grenchen, Switzerland in 1888 by Adolph and Alfred Kuth, Certina originally produced movements for other watchmaking companies in the area. Employing three people in a small workshop, the firm steadily grew until by 1938 — its 50th anniversary — it numbered over 200 workers. Attracted to the Latin word “certus,” meaning “sure,” Certina registered this word in 1939 and chose to operate under the name in 1949. A turtle shell was chosen in 1959 as a symbol to represent the company’s robust wares.
That same year, Certina released the DS, an automatic watch with 200m of water resistance; by 1960, a DS model had traveled over 8,000 meters into the Himalayas with flawless performance. 1965 saw a further milestone, with a DS model accompanying divers on the Sealab II project to study the underwater environment under the auspices of the US Navy.
Following on the heels of numerous other milestones, Certina was acquired by the SMH Group in 1983; founded by Nicolas G. Hayek, this conglomerate would subsequently change its name to Swatch Group Ltd. in 1999. Today, Certain produced mid-priced timepieces packed with incredible value under the auspices of the Swatch Group, including contemporary versions of the DS series of dive watches. Meanwhile, its vintage wares likewise present an excellent, accessible entryway into the watch collecting hobby.
