Why We Love it

The Submariner emerged at a time when oceanographer Jacques Cousteau exposed the world to the wonders of undersea exploration. Skin-diving as a sport became accessible to amateurs, and one by one watch brands—from Blancpain to Omega—brought out their own purpose-driven dive watches.

Rolex was fortunate in that René Jeanneret, one of the company's directors, was a skin-diving enthusiast. This gave the Crown a unique insight into the development of their diving watch. They enlarged the Oyster case and made it thicker, offering added protection against pressure at depth, and capped the case with a rotating bezel. The dial they made black, a no-frills choice, and coated the hour plots and hands with a liberal amount of luminescent material. It was upon this template that all later references of Submariner would be modeled.

Throughout the decades Rolex developed and improved the model, until by the mid-1960s the Submariner had become what it is today—a classic.

No other reference of Submariner represents this spirit of continuity than the Reference 5513—the watch we offer here.

The longest-running model of Submariner, from the 1960s to the 1980s the 5513 maintained a homogeneity of appearance that is unparalleled by any other watch (except perhaps the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch).

Ours dates from circa 1984, but one could be forgiven for thinking that it’s much earlier. The only testament to its modernity is the presence of a glossy dial rather than the matte dials that dominated the model from the 1960s through the early 80s. But the case is 39mm, the same as the Submariner always had been, and the luminescent material is still Tritium, which has developed a lovely creamy patina over time.

The 5513 has become incredibly popular over the last few years. Excellent examples such as this one have become increasingly difficult to come by. Striking a balance of originality and patina, this example is a no-excuses Submariner that will please first-time vintage Rolex buyers and seasoned collectors alike.
