Why We Love it

Here’s one for the tropical dial lovers out there. Believe it or not, this Seamaster chrono began its life with a metallic blue dial, and look how far it’s come!

Omega’s most famous chronograph is the Speedmaster Professional, but savvy collectors know that there’s a whole slew of other great chronos that came out of Bienne during the 1960s and 1970s. This Seamaster, a rare reference 145.029, is one of the coolest lesser-known models. Featuring the same great Caliber 861 movement as the Speedy Pro, this is a top-notch chrono with tons of style.

One of our favorite features of this watch is the cushion case, which has a unique blocky shape that differentiates it from others of the era, however, this watch is really all about the dial. Incase you’re not familiar with the term, a tropical dial is one that began one color (usually black), but faded due to UV light exposure or a paint defect to a lighter color. It’s rare for metallic blue dials to turn tropical, but that’s what happened to this watch. The dial is now flaxen wheatish color and still maintains its metallic sheen. It’s quite something.

If you’re looking for something that stands out from the crowd, this Seamaster is a great choice. You’re very unlikely to run into another guy wearing this reference in the wild, and a tropical dial? Fuggedaboutit.
