Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

1974 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ref. 5402

To say that the Royal Oak caused waves when it released would be an understatement.

It was a luxury watch in a decidedly non luxurious material- stainless steel- a notion which was unheard of at the time. AP had its work cut out for itself, in that it needed to justify a price-point and design language heretofore unseen in the haute horology world.

The Royal Oak's design is known today as iconic- legendary even. But forty five years ago, the angles, dimensions, and assembly of this porthole inspired monster would have be nothing short of shocking.

This ad magnificently captures the glint of the integral bracelet and refractions of light from the bezel. The micro-tapisserie dial, applied “AP” logo at 6:00 and even those jarring bolts are on full, brilliant display.

Of course with any innovative design, looks are important. But good looks alone are not enough to inspire a paradigm shift. Often it takes some poetry and salesmanship to actually get things sold. This ad acts as a time capsule of sorts, providing a glimpse into the mindset, language and story used by Audemars Piguet to forge a different path of materials and design.

Framed with shade of white matting to compliment the tone of the paper. Solid wood black frame.
