Heuer Carrera 'Reverse Panda'

Why We Love It

Watches and racing are inextricably linked. In many ways, the Heuer Carrera is at the heart of that connection.

This particular Carrera, a Reference 2447NST, dates to the late 1960s. It features a rare and desirable "Reverse-Panda" configuration with white triple subsidiary register layout. This model also comes with a printed tachymeter ring on the dial, earning it the "NST" model designator.

At a lithe 35mm, this Carrera is the perfect size as it can be concealed easily under a cuff and won't get in the way of your driving gloves. Dating to 1969, the watch is in stunning condition. The matte black dial is nearly perfect with lume plots achieving a rich even patina. With a sharp, crisp case and a Gay Freres beads-of-rice bracelet, this Carrera is a stunner.

Whether navigating the chicanes at your local race course or just cruising around town, it’s the perfect companion for a fast-paced lifestyle.

The Story

The Carrera was one of Jack Heuer’s most passionate projects, and his design ethos for this watch can be summed up in one word: legibility. Jack wanted a watch that was stylish and functional, a watch that gives you everything you need and nothing you don’t. From the sharp bevels on the case to the artful openness of the dial, it's become a classic.

In designing the Carrera, Heuer finally created something that was entirely his, and is without question the chronograph that is most associated with him. He incorporated a tension ring around the edge of the dial, and printed the tachymeter track on it. Heuer's obsession with legibility led to a dial design that was simpler to read than the Omega Speedmaster or the Rolex Daytona (released the same year as the Carrera).

What resulted was a chronograph that gave only the most necessary bits of information, with plain baton markers: clean, uncluttered, undeniably attractive.
