SubmitWhy We Love It
You've heard our schtick on modern watches before. You know that we occasionally present ultra-contemporary timepieces that speak to us.
Well, this one is screaming at us.
Bulgari enjoys a unique relationship with the timepiece industry. A part of the LVMH group, they are perhaps better known for their luxurious high jewelry, fashion, and fragrance divisions than they are for their wristwatches. But what watches they do have are really quite something. One need look no further than their award-winning (and completely breathtaking) Octo Finissimo series to prove that they have it where it counts in terms of design chops.
Less well known, but equally interesting to us are timepieces such as this one: A Bulgari Diagono Chronograph produced in magnesium. Introduced in 2016, the Diagono Chronograph enjoyed only a short production run, but has already won a place of affection in our eyes. An extension of the Diagono line introduced in 1988, the magnesium casing material is the latest in a line of non traditional materials used by the brand in their wristwatches (notably aluminum, introduced in the late 1990s) and is a fully formed design exercise that saw production and retail sale.
Powered by the Bulgari Calibre B130 Automatic Chronograph movement (based on an ETA Calibre 2894), the design language harkens back to brand heritage with a characteristics BVLGARI/BVLGARI bezel and a classic triple-register dial layout. It employs PEEK materials (polyether ether ketone) as well as ceramic, rubber (for the strap) and steel elements throughout the watch.
The resulting product is at once retro-fantastic and highly avant-garde. You'd have to look pretty far and wide to find a contemporary timepiece with high end casing materials and functionality for anywhere near this price point. And it probably wouldn't end up looking this cool!
