Why We Love it

Here at Analog/Shift, we’re passionate about timepieces with tradition, style and value. When these elements combine, an icon is formed. For us and for many collectors, it’s hard to get more iconic than the brand with the big crown—Rolex.

True, when you think of Rolex, certain models might spring to mind. Like the GMT Master, the aviator's timepiece designed in conjunction with Pan Am pilots. Or you might think of the Submariner, the legendary dive watch in whose mold nearly all dive watches are cast.

If there’s one thing that these watches have in common, it’s that they’re all a part of the Oyster Perpetual line. Combining Rolex’s trademark waterproof Oyster case and the automatic movements that the manufacture has produced since the 1920s, the models that comprise the Oyster Perpetual line are the absolute centerpiece of Rolex’s collection. For the discerning collector, those two little words on the dial just below the big crown logo mean reliability and desirability.

But throughout the century that Rolex has been in existence, the manufacture has produced dozens—if not hundreds—of other models, all made with the same care and attention to detail that made the Oyster Perpetual line famous. These watches, the Oyster Precision collection, were produced from the 1950s through the 1960s. They were made as high-grade affordable gentleman's watches in an era when owning a Swiss watch from any brand—never mind a Rolex—was a privilege few people could attain.

For the man of taste but not of means, they present a value proposition that’s hard to argue with even today.

With perfect portions, a robust manually winding movement and timeless styling, the Oyster Precision may simply be one of the most versatile and wearable watches ever designed. This particular model, an Oyster Precision Reference 6424, dates from approximately 1958. It features a classic steel Oyster case, slightly larger than most of its contemporaries.

Replete with coffin-shaped hour markers on a gloss black dial, this piece simply oozes vintage charm.

Unlike other models in the Oyster Precision line, the Reference 6424 features 20mm lugs, an added perk that drastically increases strap options. Whether paired with full-grain leather or a period metal bracelet, this is one vintage Rolex that will stand out in a sea of sports watches.
