Why We Love It
German watches are being talked about more and more recently, thanks to huge success from brands like A. Lange & Söhne and Nomos Glashutte. While still overlooked when it comes to the more storied Swiss producers, the Germans manufacture some of the best watches in the world.
And of course you all know we have a thing for military watches. So - German military timepieces? Oh yes.
The model we have here is the Type 88, produced by Junghans. At 38mm, the watch was designed to be legible while on the battlefield. The case shows just the right amount of wear around the edges, likely earned in the field while issued as an authentic military piece. The glossy black dial contrasts greatly with the beautifully aged white Arabic numerals. The syringe hands are definitely the focal point of this dial - featuring a rich creamy patination.
This is an awesome 'oddball' chronograph with genuine military provenance, and not one you're likely to see on the wrist of someone at the corner deli, so if you're a fan of German watchmaking and/or armed forces history, have a close look!
Junghans, a German company perhaps better known for their bauhaus and aviation-inspired wristwatch designs and mantle clocks, has been in business producing such instruments since 1861. In 1903, Junghans had the largest watch and clock factory in the world.
In addition to producing watches and clocks, the manufacturer also produces fuze-technology for artillery, mortar, medium-calibre, tanks, anti-tanks and cruise missiles.
Stainless Steel case is 38MM (excluding the crown). Junghans Type 88. Calibre J88 manually-winding chronograph movement. Circa 1950s.
Overall Condition: The watch is in very good condition with normal signs of wear from age and use. The scalloped bi-directionally rotating timing bezel shows wear from age and use. Luminous black gloss dial is in good condition with patina throughout. Luminous syringe handset shows rich patination. Unsigned crown.
Includes black 'Bundeswehr' cuff strap with military markings.
