Why We Love It
It is no secret that we have a special love for Military watches at Analog/Shift.
After all, they are the pieces that often carry the most harrowing stories- literally made for courageous men on the battlefield.
Issued exclusively by the French Air Force, this J. Auricoste Type XX Flyback Chronograph is a rare and unusual chronograph produced under contract but overshadowed by its name-brand cousins. Don't take that to mean its any less of a gem! Housed within its chrome plated mid-case is a Lemania Calibre 2040 Flyback Chronograph. The watch also features a steel caseback and fluted bezel assembly - giving a distinctive look unmatched by its contemporaries.
In continual service from 1954 to 1982 (as indicated by its engravings) this watch was property of state, issued for active duty pilots.
In short, this piece is for the military collector or aviation enthusiast looking to check off that Type XX box without breaking the bank - but it is also just one hell of a good looking and great-wearing field watch, regardless of how geeky you actually want to admit to being.
As vintage watch collectors, we find beauty in discovering the undiscovered, or bringing light to the unknown or forgotten. For every Omega, Breitling, or Heuer, there’s a Buren, a Yema, or a Mulco, long-dead and forgotten manufactures whose products survive to tell the tale. The tales they tell speak of glory and then obscurity as the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s forced many brands to shutter their factories and go out of business.
Chrome mid-case is approximately 38mm (excluding the crown). Lemania Calibre 2040 manually-winding flyback chronograph movement. Circa 1954.
Overall Condition: The case is in good condition overall showing signs of polish and normal wear consistent with age and use. Luminous matte dial is in good condition throughout, showing age and patinated Arabic indices. Service chronograph hand. Unsigned crown. Caseback shows 'Fin de Garantie' engravings dating from 1954-1982.
Includes black stitched leather strap with steel pin buckle.
