Tudor Prince Oysterdate 34

Tudor Prince Oysterdate 34

Why We Love It

Gilty and gorgeous—these words sum up the dial of this Tudor Oyster Prince 34.

As though the black and gold coloring wasn't stunning enough, its richly textured 'honeycomb' dial comes alive when the light hits it. The contrasting color palette is punctuated further by the rich red of the roulette date wheel.

In the early years of the watchmaking industry, before mass-machining took effect, every component of a watch was constructed by hand, or milled on a hand-powered machine. Although this watch was made by machine, textured dials are still extremely complex to construct, and are a key sign that the dial has not been refinished.

Tudor was created to provide a more accessible product for the masses than Rolex could provide. In many ways, the intention of this piece remains today, as it is still of a remarkable value when compared to other steel Rolexes...

...or even other vintage Tudors, for that matter.

The Story

Although it started as Rolex’s gateway brand, the quality of Tudor’s products were by no means inferior to Rolex’s. In fact, the use of many of the same parts as Rolex (including dials and the patented Oyster cases) ensured that the consumer was getting Rolex quality at a slightly lower price point.

It’s in vintage Tudor models like the Tudor Prince Oysterdate 34, particularly, that this is most apparent. From its inception, the Tudor Prince has been shrouded in a mantle of sheer uncompromising toughness. Early ad campaigns stressed the watch’s resilience, and its participation in the British North Greenland Expedition brought awareness of the brand to the world.
