Why We Love It
Here at Analog/Shift, we’re passionate about timepieces with tradition, style and value. When these elements combine, an icon is formed. For us and for many collectors, it’s hard to get more iconic than the brand with the big crown—Rolex.
But not all Rolexes need be large, sporty, and expensive. Take for example the Oyster Royal.
This simple, elegant timepieces utilizes an iconic 34mm Oyster case which wears wonderfully, particularly when poking out beneath a shirt cuff. Its glossy black dial features dart markers, alpha hands, and an applied coronet at 12:00 that really gives the piece a unique vintage charm.
With a slimline profile thanks to its robust manually winding movement, the Royal is a rarer model in the Oyster range, and this particular example is as nice as they come. Paired with a genuine Rolex leather strap and steel buckle, this little beauty is every bit the icon of its newer, bigger brothers.
When you think of Rolex, your first thoughts may be to their unforgettable GMT Master with its two-tone "Pepsi" bezel, the aviator's timepiece designed with Pan-Am pilots and transatlantic jet flights in mind. Or it might go to the form-follows-function Explorer I, the watch designed for mountaineers and tested under the most extreme conditions on earth. But it probably goes to the Submariner, the legendary diver by which all others are measured.
There's no denying that a Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic watches of the last 60 years, but the same can easily be said about its diminutive siblings in the Oyster series. Designed for everyday wear, these timepieces were made as high grade affordable gentleman's watches in an era when owning a Swiss watch from any brand - never mind a Rolex - was a privilege far fewer could attain than today.
Stainless steel Oyster case is approximately 34mm (excluding the crown). Reference 6426. Rolex manually-winding movement. Circa 1961.
Overall Condition: The case is in fantastic condition overall showing normal wear consistent with age and use. Luminous glossy black dial is in excellent condition with applied dart indices.
