Rolex Submariner 16800 Box & Papers - 1985

Rolex Submariner 16800 Box & Papers - 1985

Finding high quality vintage Submariners is becoming increasingly difficult.  The market is flooded with poor examples, often suffering from excessive wear or over-polishing, or worse: over "restored" examples presented as all-original.

Given the popularity of the iconic diver in the past five years or so, it is no surprise that many of the cleanest all-original examples have already been snatched up by eager collectors, and prying them out of their hands is often an impossible task...

After all, these watches are numero uno on many enthusiast's grail list for good reason.

The first Rolex Submariner was launched in 1954 and has been in continuous production ever since, making it one of the longest running models of any timepiece made. With indisputably stunning looks that match virtually any situation, the Submariner presents itself to a tremendously broad market. Of course, most people would queue up to buy a new one…but you know better, which is why you’re here.

What you are looking at is a truly stellar example of the Reference 16800, a transitional model which evolved from the first Submariners with a date function (Ref 1680).  Dating from approximately 1985, this particular Sub features a sapphire crystal (the first ever used on a Submariner), brilliant glossy dial, and quick-set date function.  It has developed an absolutely remarkable creamy patina across the hour markers and hands (not often seen on glossy dial version), has a great case that hasn't been over polished by zealous watchmakers, and even has its original bezel insert with unbelievable original caramel dot intact.

Mounted up on the optional heavy duty Oyster bracelet or one of a selection of leather military-style straps, this is one killer Sub that makes for a perfect daily wearer, and is sure to capture the attention of collectors and aesthetes alike.
