Universal Genève Tri-Compax

Universal Genève Tri-Compax

Why We Love It

The Universal Genève Tri-Compax ranks as one of the most desired models of vintage chronograph. Ever since its debut in the 1940s, it’s been worn by everyone from presidents (Harry S. Truman) to rock stars (Eric Clapton). While the sporty steel models from the 1960s are the most popular, early examples tug at our heartstrings.

Watches like this one are exactly what we mean. There’s an undoubted elegance to the layout of the dial, but the fact that the case is steel makes it more utilitarian. While a solid gold triple calendar chronograph can often be viewed as a “special occasion” watch, suitable for those events when only a tux or a bespoke suit will do, it’s easier to imagine wearing it every day.

And, believe us, you’ll want to.

The Story

Complicated wristwatches had long been Universal Genève’s forte, but never before had they been so perfectly expressed than in the Tri-Compax.

These three complications were housed in a variety of cases, from gold to the stainless steel featured here in this Tri-Compax.

Universal Genève advertised the Tri-Compax as being useful for “every business and professional man.” While that may not ring true in this age of smartphones, there’s an undeniable utility in having all the necessary information right on your wrist, without having to touch a screen. Triple calendar chronographs hold a touch of whimsy, to be sure, but with such an attractive package, you can’t be blamed for wanting one.
