Why We Love It
Wearing a vintage gold watch makes a statement without saying any words. Actually, wearing any vintage mechanical watch in this Digital Age hints at an appreciation for well-made things. But when that watch is gold—well, we’ll let this one speak for itself.
This is a Universal Genève Tri-Compax Reference 12296 crafted in warm pink gold. Although most of the models that hit the market are sportier versions from the 1960s, this earlier one simply reverberates with an understated elegance despite the precious metal of the oversized 37mm case. Gazing at the silvery depths of the dial, with its captivating moon-phase, and you’ll hear a song without words—alluring and timeless.
Complicated wristwatches had long been Universal Genève’s forte, but never before had they been so perfectly expressed than in the Tri-Compax.
These three complications were housed in a variety of cases, from stainless steel to the pure 14k or 18k gold featured here in this Reference 12296.
Universal Genève advertised the Tri-Compax as being useful for “every business and professional man.” While that may not ring true in this age of smartphones, there’s an undeniable utility in having all the necessary information right on your wrist, without having to touch a screen. Triple calendar chronographs hold a touch of whimsy, to be sure, but with such an attractive package, you can’t be blamed for wanting one.
18k pink gold case is approximately 37mm (excluding crown and pushers). Reference 12296. Calibre 481 Manually-Wound Chronograph Movement. Circa 1950s.
Overall Condition: Case is in very good condition overall with slight signs of use and wear in keeping with age. Dial is in very good condition with some signs of age. Signed crown. Case back has some signs of use and wear but is in otherwise very good condition.
Includes one 18mm leather strap.
