In the 1960's and 70’s, sporty chronographs were all the rage and there's no doubt Heuer was the brand to beat, with some of the most renowned racers and teams of the day regularly seen sporting Heuer’s iconic Carrera, Monza and Autavia models. Nowadays, however, many vintage Heuer chronographs remain out of reach of many average enthusiasts.
The profile of vintage Heuer models has become more distinguished, giving rise to an off-shoot of collectors who target what we now refer to as the “Poor Man’s Heuers.”
See, while Heuer was producing their own timepieces, they were also manufacturing pieces to be sold at a more affordable price through large retailers like Sears & Roebuck and Zales, with other brand names like Zodiac and Clebar on the dial. Sporting the very same Valjoux movements and clean, sleek looks at a fraction of the price, these pieces present an exceptional value to the savvy enthusiast.
Though many executions of "Poor Man's Heuers" exist, there is no question that those expressions that mirror the 1960s Heuer Carrera are the most coveted, even in the most staid colorways. That has made finding good examples tricky, and made the sportier 'panda' dial variants almost as hard to locate as the Heuers themselves.
This Zodiac-branded variant is in excellent condition, with a nicely sized 36mm case, panda dial and tritium-lumed hands and indices. Inside beats a venerable Valjoux 7733 hand-wound chronograph movement — the same guts you would find in a Heuer of this era — making this watch more than just a pretty face.
The lust to find a reasonably-priced, expertly-built, excellently-sized 'panda' chronograph is as strong with passing enthusiasts as it is among serious collectors; from the looks of this one, it's easy to see why.
Chrome-plated case is approximately 36mm. Valjoux Caliber 7733 Manually-Wound Chronograph Movement. Circa 1960s.
Overall Condition: Chrome plated case is in very good condition with minor signs of use and wear including some small scratches. Dial is in very good condition; hands have been color-matched to match indices. Unsigned crown. Unsigned case back has some scratches and tool marks but is in very good condition.
Includes one 19mm black perforated leather rally-style strap.
